Bronowski: We have to touch people

Two extracts from the 1970s Ascent of Man series, viewed from the perspective of a friendship with Leo Szillard who first described the potential of a nuclear chain reaction.

He describes the limits of knowledge in the Principle of Uncertainty and a dangerous political counter conception of that time – a principle of monstrous certainty

Bronowski describes how Szillard failed in his efforts to prevent the A Bomb being used at Hiroshima and Nakasaki.

In the second video’ alluding to Milgram’s experiments he describes how we are distanced from the suffering of others by the push button order.  Standing in the ash pond of human remains at Auschwitz declares that we have to ‘close the distance between the push button order and the human act. We have to touch people.” .
